From a Birthday Gift to a Growing 3D Printing Company

Introduction

N&M Development was founded by Niels Visser and Michael Stam, two friends with a shared passion for design and technology. The story began when Michael bought Niels a 3D printer for his birthday. At the time, they were already experimenting with 3D models of figurines and small prototypes, but now they had the tools to bring their ideas to life.

The early days were filled with trial and error. Working out of the garage at their parents’ house, they spent countless hours testing prints, fixing mistakes, and slowly learning how to turn digital files into usable objects. Their first real breakthrough came from their jobs at a vacation resort. With hundreds of bungalows on site, spare parts were always needed, but many were no longer in production. By designing and printing replacements, they created a practical solution that quickly proved profitable.

How It All Began

The single printer soon wasn’t enough. Demand grew, and a second printer was added, followed by two more only a month later. What started as a hobby corner quickly transformed into a small production space.

A turning point came when a delayed filament delivery forced them to visit a local reseller. There they first saw the Bambu Lab X1, a printer that was faster, more precise, and capable of multicolor printing. Both Niels and Michael were so excited that each secretly planned to surprise the other by buying one. In the end, Niels ordered it first, just days before Michael would have done the same.

The new printer changed everything. Suddenly, what once took a week could be done in two days. It also opened the door to more complex and colorful designs. Of course, the first weeks brought plenty of failed prints and learning curves, but once they mastered the settings and materials, production reached a whole new level. A second X1 was purchased soon after, and the business kept scaling up.

Today, Niels and Michael live together and have dedicated an entire floor of their home to the company. One side is filled with printers running day and night, while the other serves as a packaging and logistics room. What once fit in a garage has become a full in-house production floor.

From Ideas to Brands

As skills grew, so did creativity. One memorable project was creating miniature city models as gifts, which later became the foundation for The Micro City. These small, detailed replicas proved to be personal and meaningful, quickly gaining popularity.

Another key moment came when a colleague asked them to print 100 humorous items for a bachelorette party. When she shared the result on TikTok, the video went viral with over 200,000 views. Orders began flooding in, and it became clear that customer imagination could drive the next wave of products.

This experience led to a stronger focus on colorful figurines. The first bestseller was a frog holding up its middle finger. Soon after, requests poured in for new animals—a dolphin, a giraffe, and many more. This growing line of fun and expressive figurines became AnimalsAttitude, a brand designed to bring smiles and laughter.

A similar process sparked The Duck Specialist, a shop entirely dedicated to collectible duck figurines. Alongside these, PlasticOpMaat was created as a service for companies in need of custom solutions, especially replacement parts. Together, these four brands formed the pillars of N&M Development.

Their creativity led to the launch of several brands:

1. Plastic op Maat

2. The Micro City

"At its core, N&M Development believes: if you can think it, you can make it. The company continues to grow by adding new printers, experimenting with sustainable materials, and expanding product lines.
